Make sure to check out the Spring Creek area as well... It is a new neo-traditional neighborhood (similar architecture and character to the Georgia area and not so suburban). It gets discounted by a lot of people because it is not in the suburbs but it is a great place to live... Lots of friendly people and a wide diversity of home styles and prices (not just a neighborhood "from the 200's" like the 'burbs... You can go to the CNU (Congress for the New Urbanism) pictures website for pictures: http://www.bubbleshare.com/album/493355

Good News! First of all, you do not have to be in a rush to find housing in the area, Fort Carson has brand new housing opening up and a lot of it.

My husband retired out of Carson in 05 and we have had a house in this area since 1999. There are many great neighborhoods that have'nt been listed here yet. Manitou Springs, Cascade, and Chipita Park to mention a few. These are homes in the mountains and still only a 20minute "coast to post" down the mountain (my husband included). Additionally, there are many soldiers that commute from the Penrose area south of Colorado Springs.

More GOOD NEWS: Colorado Springs is a great military city (Fort Carson, US Air Force Academy, Peterson Air Force Base, Schriver AFB, and Cheyenne Mountain (NORAD). Add to this all the contractors and NORTHCOM (Homeland Security) and I think your husband will have few problems finding a position to suit his needs. My husband started working in the Civil Service while he was still on terminal leave.

Good Luck and let me know if I can help.

We have 7 months to sell this house. In Sept he will be deploying to Iraq again and I won't be able to move by myself. So we can get a rental close to this base and when he returns Sept of next year we can start planning to move to Carson this is the updated info that I was told unless things change with the military that is ALWAYS a factor. We are just hoping that once he gets out of the Army which will be in 7 years he will be able to find a good job. He works with computers. And there are great universities for my kids. My oldest will be 13 he is not sure if he wants to go in the same filed as his dad( computers) or a doctor. This WILL be our final move for retirement. Thanks for the info Allison adn everyone else.

Zillow has a pretty good estimator for homes plus their taxes and insurance.
