Question Ok yet another question.....

Well we are in process of putting the house on the market I have a few real estate agents coming this week. I have been reading the threads on here about taxes and utilities. My husband is the only one working now he brings home every 2 weeks after taxes, allotments(take home pay) $1751. So that is $3500.00 a month. With a family of 6 would we be able to survive in Colorado? Before utilities we have 3 bills 1 Credit card, 2 loans totaling $930.00. We are going to pay off the credit card and 1 loan before we move so that will leave us with the van payment of $390.00. We don't pay for the mortgage as our BAH takes care of that, thank god!

I don't mind putting my info out there. I just want to make sure we will be able to afford to live out there before we make a huge decision. Thanks

Well, there are lots who are surviving for less here. The average teacher salary is $40K annually. So, I think you will be okay...you won't be living in a $400K home by any means, but I think you will be okay. For a family of 5, I spend about $700-800 a month on groceries. There are several homes in the Fountain Valley area that are about $150K- FV is the district that supports Fort Carson though there are several other districts to choose from.

Are budgeting two Roth IRAs (2 X $5000/year), (presumably) four education IRAs (4 X $2000/year), and a 401(k) max out?

you BAH will cover all of your housing expenses to a certain extent so the rest is how ever you manage your money. so you will be the deciding factor.

No I am not a teacher, I want to go to school for nursing but I put my stuff on hold to raise my family. So now that all my kids are in school now I can focus on myself and my education

And yes we do shop at the comissary and walmart. We get some good deals at walmart. And I get my breads at the outlet. We average about $600.00 a month on grocerys. ANd yes we are looking for a house within our BAH so that is not a problem.

See, you will be fine! Welcome to beautiful Colorado! The worst thing about our state... you will never want to leave. I have met one military family who couldn't want to leave...mom couldn't stand how we were trying to hold her accountable for her kid.
