Relocating with horses
We will be relocating from Alaska with our horses. We are looking at Colorado Springs south to Pueblo and north to Castle Rock, as well as all areas in between as a possible retirement location with our horses. My biggest concern would be the availability hay, access to a veterinarian and farrier. Can anyone share their insight into owning horses in that part of Colorado?
Besides trail riding, what are the other horse activites available? Cutting, reining, roping, working and versatility ranch horse, team penning, etc.
Thanks in advance!

I have a friend who lives near downtown Castle Rock and they board a horse just southeast of Castle Rock. I think there are a few ranches there that will take them in (at a cost of course).

Down in Fountain, there is an arena by Metcalf Park where several get together and barrell race, practice roping, etc. They get together frequently in the afternoon/evenings and usually end up barbquing too.
Good luck in your search!

I think you will find a lot of 'horse' things here. Pretty much anywhere between Castle Rock and Pueblo you will have a choice of many equine vets and farriers. Hay availability is USUALLY not a problem - best to stock up a little so you have at least few months worth and don't let your supply get too low. There have been some years where hay costs have been very high ($12 a bale for a 60 lb bale or grass hay) - probably about $8-9.50 a bale now. Most feed stores have hay, as well as private farms. New hay season starts about mid-July here.

Plenty of equestrian horse property in Black Forest area too. I have family that shows horses and been in all aspects of equestrian for many many years. You are moving to the right area!
