I totally agree with you on this. Small but lunch is always good - everything is fresh!

Empire on Academy & Vickers has been closed TWICE for rodent and cockroach infestation. The food is bland for the most part.

Will try Ultimate soon.

I've tried both Empire and Ultimate buffet. I thought they are both about the same. We've ate at Ultimate more because it's closer to home and my kids like the koi pond.

In my experience, if you are after good food, buffets are not the place to find it. Buffets are usually good for *lots* of adequate food, but nothing phenomenal.

I would agree with most people that Empire is one of the better Chinese buffets around. Also, Ocean's Grill, up by Briargate and Academy (next door to best buy) is decent. The name implies seafood, but its really just another huge Chinese buffet with everything Empire offers (sushi, mongolian bbq, tons and tons of choice).

We have always liked the chinese buffet next to the south Bally's on Academy and S Chelton. Good food for a buffet, friendly service, always busy.

Ultimate buffet is the better choice over empire. Have had good experiences so far at ultimate.

Empire used to seem fairly decent then one night we got raw chicken(which some may not have even noticed with the sauce on it) and then the last time we went we noticed there was food caked all over our seating material. It was dim enough most probably wouldnt even notice. Then we checked the next booth and it was mostly the same.. very dirty.. food stuck to the fabric..etc. The dim lights in that area made it hardly noticeable though unless you were looking for it. Id stay away from empire these days.. not sure what happened to the place.

We go to this Chinese buffet in the Phoenix area every time I visit my relatives. I thought it was one of the best (so did they). Then we went to Ultimate buffet in Colorado Springs. Without a doubt, it blows away that Phoenix Chinese buffet. The food is fresher and the selection is broader at the Ultimate buffet, IMHO. I now cringe at going to that Phoenix place. And I have found no better place in COS.

Buffets are tricky places. You may think the place is good the first time you go because you are drooling over the vast array of treats for the belly and not really paying attention to the quality and freshness of the food being offered. You have to go to these places a few times before you really know if there are any good or not.

Now, if history serves me right, the Ultimate buffet will now go to **** in a (foreclosed) hand basket now that I like it

DW and I tried out the Empire Asian Buffet yesterday.

One word: ICK!

The place is filthy, the food was greasy and short on taste. The rat trap sitting prominently on the steps on the parking lot side should have been a giveaway had I been a little more situationally aware going in.

Guess I should have read the entire thread before going there!
