mechanical question
does anybody know what this might be? my neighbor runs some kind of machine in his garage all of the time which creates a loud humming noise and smells like oil or antifreeze or something-any ideas would be appreciated...thanks

if it is a generator, why would he run it all of the time-it runs during nice weather when you wouldn't need it for heat or whatever(i am not mechanically inclined by the way so forgive me)-i think sometimes it even runs when he's not home----

Is it running 24/7 or just now and then? If now and then, it might be an air compressor.

hi, thanks for the help-i don't think he runs it at night when he's home-mostly it runs during the day for hours on end straight- it doesn't shut on and off or anything-it makes a loud humming sound though-and i can actually hear it in my yard even though is garage door and windows are shut- i didn't really think of illegal activity-i know he is always working on his pick up truck and he does lots of mechanical type stuff...what would you run a generator for if you are not home....?

Ummm...why not have this conversation with the neighbor?
Could be an air compressor, or the recirculation pump on a parts cleaner, a noisy transformer on an arc welder, or maybe he's making Soylent Green for the neighborhood Memorial Day barbeque...

Maybe it's a machine that pulps up dead bodies and reconstitutes them into dayglo fish bait. It would make sense that he doesn't run it at night, because who wants to mash up corpses after dark?
