Looking for info on October road conditions
I will be moving to Colorado Springs in October of next year (when i get out of the Navy) at the latest but may be as soon as end of may start of June. I am looking for info on what the roads coming into there would be like around mid-october. Not sure if i want to wait til the military will pay me for the move or do it early due to driving with 6000+ lbs in a rental truck and 4 young children. I used to live in the area before i joined up but that was about 7 years ago so kinda fuzzy on the road conditions at specific times. I will be coming up from Arizona through Albuquerque, NM so a southern approach keeping mainly to the freeways. Will be using a 22' truck and not used to driving one that long that is all one unit.

Depends on which route you're taking and if it snows. I25 from NM usually stays open and clear year round though. Just check the weather report before you go and hope that it's reliable.
I would definitely let someone else foot the bill if possible. Won't the military just pay for movers to do it all for you?

Yes in October it could either be sunny and 60s or a huge blizzard depending on the day. If it snows, I-25 is usually well-kept throughout NM and CO, but I have had some problems in the mountains just south of Las Vegas, NM and Raton Pass around the border. There is so little traffic between Santa Fe and Trinidad that it takes longer for the highway to be driveable.

the military will pay movers but I let the movers do my first move and wound up losing my tv in the process. got reimbursed for it but was without my big screen for 3 months while i waited. won't be doing that again. it will only run me about $1000 overall for the move so no biggy there. I just don't wanna take the chance of my wife hitting icy roads (born and raised in arizona). Thanks for the input will look into the conditions this year. i know they can change but will normally stay the same form one year to the next.

October is dry most days, but usually contains one or two systems of snowfall.

Yea, I wouldn't worry. If there happens to be a snow storm, it will only delay you a day. Our snow melts the next day. Nobody travels during a blizzard. Otherwise, plan on good traveling conditions. I also grew up in AZ and when I heard Colorado, I expected snow in the winter and cool summers. Well, we have great summers but our winters at times remind me of AZ winters when we can go outside without a coat and its 60 degrees outside. We will go through a small cold snap, occasionally get some moisture, but more often than not, we pray for snow and often get teased or get hit with a quick blizzard.

I've lived here for only 5 years, but the one thing you CAN'T count on around the front range is predictable weather. It's actually one of the things I like about living in CO.
I usually tell folks to use I40/I25 when moving from AZ/CA because it generally has better weather than I15/I70. But I got caught in a blizzard in the spring of 2008, driving from Monument to Mesa. It snowed big time from Albuquerque to Mesa. The highway was horrible. I even got hit by a sliding bus .

I remember it being in the 90's one October in the Springs! The trim to my new Chrysler melted in the sun.
