Default Moving to CS from Japan!!

And I am quite excited about it! I'm active duty AF and am curious about things to do in CS. But more importantly, do you guys recommend a good place to live, apartment-wise? Air conditioning and heat are a must, preferably in a good neighborhood. Any tips?

Well, you have pretty much all over Colorado Springs to choose from on that one - just depends on what kind of neighborhood and apartment you want - closer to the mountains, farther away, square footage, amenities, etc., how close to your place of work and so on. I've only lived in one apartment in the Springs - it was right next to Quail Lake and I could literally walk out my door down to the lake - that was pretty neat.

There is a lot to do if you're into outdoors stuff - then, the sky is your limit.
If you're more into city-life kind of things, Colorado Springs has stuff but it is more limited.

Just be sure to visit the housing office when you get here. They have listings of apartments that are military friendly.

Many of them offer discounted rates if you are on the "set-aside" program....which means they deduct the rent directly from your pay via allotment. It's much more convenient for you and will often get you a reduced rate for rent.

Your sponsor should also be able to help you.

Heating is pretty standard.....if not you'd freeze to death in the winter. Air conditioning can vary from place to place though.

In my humblest of opinions....the Northern part of the city is better than the South.

Where in Japan? I was stationed way up North in Misawa for 4 yrs...prolly when you were just a wee toddler (I'm retired AF).

In fact, I came to the Springs (Peterson), from my tour in Japan. I spent 4 yrs here and loved every minute of it. In fact, as soon as I retired from the AF in the DC area, I came back.

Hope you enjoy it here.

My husband and I will also be moving from Japan to COS in a few months we are thinking of getting out of the Military and setting down roots in the area. I have been looking at neighborhoods and so far the north east seems nice. School Districts 20, 38, 12 and 49 (academy, lewis-palmer, cheyenne mountain and falcon) all look nice I have been looking at property for sale But you may be able to search for an apartment in those areas. The ppar website listed below will let you search rental properties based on all sorts of different criteria everything from which part of town you want to be in to what sort of amenities you are looking for.

The website Fort-Carson.com. Homes for Sale near Fort Carson, Colorado - is helpful when looking at real estate because the neighborhoods are well mapped out. I have been using it in conjunction with Colorado Springs Real Estate - Official MLS Listings - PPAR.com

I hope this helps. And would love to know what the locals think about these neighborhoods.
