The Colorado Springs Metropolitan Statistical area population is over 600,000...(city and outlying areas.) Actual city population is over 400,000. It's a large city.

Because the map only shows the crime for the City of Colorado Springs and Security-Widefield is unincorporated and Fountain is a separate city (as Froggin said).

Colorado Springs really cannot be classified as a large city, metro area notwithstanding.
I should think the actual city pop should be at least 500K, if not 600K.

Mostly because in those areas, there a lot of retired individuals who live in that neighborhood- they bought their house brand new in the 50-70s, its paid for, and they don't want to leave.

Otowi, kudos! But technically we aren't Colorado Springs so we can't be considered the southern part of COS. I agree with you, we live in a great small community. SSHHH! Don't tell anyone, but I just started being more consistent with locking my doors just a couple years ago. I didn't have anything in the house worth stealing- lol! Now that we are both working, our house doesn't look like a garage sale! HA! We are no longer college students with three kiddos in diapers...now they are older and much more fun! (BEWARE BIRTH CONTROL DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK!!!! DH had to have 2 vasectomies!!).

And those areas where mainly the gang-bangers reside and such... what part of the city are they in? Not than I have anything against gang-bangers, because I've met a few of them in my town and they've been nice (albeit intimidating).

Seems like large city to me...although maybe that's because I currently live in a town with a population of (roughly) 76,000.

Tell that to St. Louis.

Poor St Louis! St. Louis itself is not that large, but the metro area is quite large!

Those safety rankings are usually broken down by metro size, so, for example if you're only comparing cities of over 2 million people, then NYC wins. (I'm not sure how many others would even qualify for that though).

As for cities in the 500k range, COS consistently ranks pretty high (meaning pretty safe) nationally. However, those studies only compare certain violent crime statistics (like rape, murder and armed robbery) and may or may not pertain to the sort of crime a particular individual may be most worried about, so I'd take it all with a grain of salt. Mostly, COS just feels safe in comparison to other areas I've lived in, like LA and DC... But so do plenty of other cities, like San Jose and San Diego.

There are 29 metro areas over 2 million!
