Plenty of great areas around the Springs, depending on what you're looking for.

Downtown and some of the southern end of the general area is probably the only area you'd want to stay away from if crime is a concern. The west side is fairly nice, all the way out to GotG and Manitou Springs (definitely a different feel out there). The typical sprawling-suburbia feel type places are generally towards the northeast anywhere near Academy or Powers.

Further away you've got plenty of options for a more rural feel, or even a different type of town. When I worked in CS there were people there who commuted from as far south as Pueblo and as far north as Castle Rock.

I was only there for a few months, but we had a real nice apartment on the west side at Camelback Pointe. Nice views of Pikes Peak, short drive to the Garden of the Gods, pretty much all the typical shopping stuff either right there or a short drive to Chapel Hills.

As for a GREAT place to eat in the Springs... you can't miss the Elephant Bar. Very cool asain/pacific/african fusion place. Lots of awesome safari decor that the kids love, decent prices on food and plenty of drinks. It gets pretty busy though. Apparently it's a huge chain in California, but I had never heard of it coming from the Midwest.

Hold on! I live downtown and it's very nice. Don't rule it out! Also, I wouldn't suggest the Elephant Bar to anyone! So remember: your mileage may vary!

When are you visiting? Start reading these forums, there are many threads on your very questions. One good thing: due the mountains one always knows which way is west!
