Default U-Haul rates to/from California assymetry

I just looked at the U-Haul website to measure relative demand to/from California.

For a 26' Truck leaving 8-June:

From Colorado Springs to Ventura, Ca: $522.

From Ventura to CS: $4,402

Talk about a difference!

Wow! We just got a quote from a company here in San Francisco Bay for a company (husband uses them for corporate moves) and they will move our home for 3000.....They will drive and lift it all. I have to box up the small stuff but they will box computers and tv's etc.

Default What we paid to move!

We just moved to CS area Monday. We paid $8600 for about 15,000 pounds. We hired professional movers. Totally worth it to me (a mom of three small kids) because I did not have to lift any furniture!

My in-laws are moving here at the end of the month and they have 12,000 pounds. Because they are moving in the peak moving season now - it will cost them an estimated $10,000.

I wanted to mention that - I totally love it here! I have never met a group of nicer people. I also have not seen this mentioned - I would get a local bank ASAP. We hav run into problems with our existing credit union declining charges because of out of state charges. We have to call everytime to make it go thru.

We also changed our licence plates the day we arrived!

This to me is one of the most outrageous things I have also discovered as I have looked into moving. I have similar numbers between CS and TO. I have friends who moved to TN and actually rented their UHAUL from Las Vegas -- the husband flew there and drove it here to load it up.

When we move, I think it would be worth it to sell EVERYTHING except our personals and most valued pieces to pay for as little a truck as we would have to. Then, I guess we'd have to get all new furniture in CS.

After getting prices for rental trucks from the usual suspects (UHaul, Budget, Penske, etc.), we decided to go with U-Pack for our move. They're a freight company, so their prices are pretty low. It was going to cost us about $2100 for Budget (U-Haul was $1900, but I hate their trucks), and U-Pack is $1600 for the same amount of space! That plus you don't have to pay for gas or drive the delivery-mobile across a couple of states made the decision easy for us. They seem to get good online reviews, but I guess we'll see if everything arrives in one piece. Still, for ~$1000 (after you figure gas) less, I couldn't turn it down.

I came across this back in the mid 90s too. The problem is that there are so many more people leaving CA than going in that they have to pay to have trucks brought back, so when you're leaving the state, you're paying for a roundtrip ticket, so to speak.

Zandar... we used Upack to move here to ABQ from JAX in 04. Most of our kid's big plastic stuff (Little Tikes, Step 2) was warped during the move because the trucks got so hot and they fell/shifted into awkward positions during the move. In addition, my husband stacked way too much stuff on my dresser, trying to keep the linear feet low, and my dresser got broken. (oak, but the middle support couldn't take the load) That said, I wanted to use Upack to move from here to COS, but their website said the distance isn't far enough. With gas prices as they are, it would've worked out to about the same price. (I am going to call to see if I can get a live person to agree.)

Vision67,
go to Enterprise and rent one of their trucks they usually rent to commerical businesses, it's cheaper since it's not a moving business. If you need help moving stuff, do you know any teens/college students who need some cash?
the only problem would be arriving and moving the stuff off the truck... Well, it's what we are going to do when we move to FC from Las Vegas, Nevada. Moving companies are too expensive for us. It's like wedding vendors. They jack up the price 300% just because of the word "wedding".

You mean that there are so many people leaving CA for these cold, miserable places that it costs five times more to more out than to move in? (tongue in cheek)

We rented a 26' U-haul in 6/2004 from San Diego to COS. About $2500. It broke down in AZ and we got another truck in Flagstaff. The U-haul agency was astounded by the fee. From Flagstaff to COS would've been $400. I couldn't get my agreement changed. When I got to COS, I talked to U-haul customer service and got a 20 percent refund along with all hotel costs due to the transmission problems.

You would think that at the very least the number of trucks going into would be equal to the amount leaving. Either there is a large exodus or the truck companies are scamming big time

When we moved to CO from CA in 2005, U-haul wouldn't even consider it! We were flat out denied because the trucks never came back to CA. We ended up hiring movers.
