Monument has very low crime - only one murder ever in its history, I believe, and that was domestic violence against a child, unfortunately.

I keep reading about the weather. Is Monument really colder than COS? Coming from Florida with children going to school how will affect my family on snowy days? It seems that we would not survive.

It's usually 5-8 degrees cooler in the summer and 5-8 degrees colder in the winter. It's the altitude difference that does it. Weather forecasts for snowy days usually state where the snow line will be, i.e., rain below X level and snow above X level, often times 7000 feet, 8000 feet etc. Monument sits anywhere from 6800 to 7300 feet, so it will get more snow than the city gets at 6200 feet. Still, it's not a biggie, you will not be snowed in all winter, forget any imagery from that old horror movie "The Shining" as the snow still melts fairly fast and school goes on with but a few snow days all season. It's fun, enjoy it.

Schools in the Monument area are excellent; that the Lewis-Palmer District, you can search this forum on D38 to find a lot of info. Schools a few miles south of Monument are also excellent, search on D20 (Academy School District).

We moved to Monument 6 years ago from San Diego and have somehow managed to live. MFBE pretty much nailed it. We're higher so we're cooler and we usually get more snow, but it's not a biggie. The benfit is we have pines. IMHO most of the areas in COS resemble neighborhoods you see in many cities throughout the country. There are fewer neighborhoods available in pine forests. For us, coming out of the suburbs of San Diego, the change was dramatic and very appealing. It's a matter of personal preference, but we feel we made the right choice.
