New York is becoming way too expensive for someone attempting to be on their own, and the idea of living in a place I've visited before is appealing. I am turning 30 and looking for a city that is welcoming, and can allow me to obtain a teaching career. I would like to pay rent on an apartment (condo) that is around $1,200 (with everything included). I would be making the move with me and my dog, which is really all I'd need. Please let me know if I'm romanticizing Colorado, rather than picturing the above as a reality. Also- any suggestions about cities... coming from the semi-big city life I think I would be into a slower pace.

Yes, you can find a decent place to rent for $1200 inclusive. Not all places take dogs.

I know someone who lived in LI and moved to Littleton (Denver suburb) and seems happy with her move.

You can definitely find a wonderful place to rent for $1200/month. I can't compare anything LI because I've never been there but I'd imagine it's much different. Not too many apartments or condos accept dogs but many times it just depends on the weight (and sometimes breed). You might consider a house that allows dogs.

If the $1200/mo is based on your current NY income, you might want to adjust your budget to fit CO salaries.
