Is there a place around COS where I can drive through a forest road.. something similar to the attached picture?
http://www.roamingdownunder.com/photos/boranup-drive1.jpg (broken link)

I dont want to look at the forest from a distance driving on an HWY.

On a map, look up Rampart Range Rd, accessed via Baldwin St and County Road 22, just off of Hwy 24 in Woodland Park. It's a rugged dirt road in the Pike National Forest. That's the closest you can get to that picture. Of course, once you get up there you can find a lot of roads that are close to that photo.

What Mike said, you can also go up Mount Herman road in Monument, which then intersects Rampart Range rd.

I've been meaning to ask the forum about Mt Herman Road, i.e., can a normal Jeep Grand Cherokee drive it, or is it too rutted, etc.

I have seen 2 wheel drive passenger cars on it, I think your Cherokee will do just fine. It is a little rutted in spots, but nothing extreme, i.e.. needing higher grond clearance.

Totally depends on the time of year. In the winter, I would only take tough 4x with high clearance and studded tires up there. Right now, it is fine on a non-muddy day. It's getting worse all the time though and it's been a long time since it was properly grated. It's probably only a matter of time before they close it down for good. It's getting to be overly used and there are too many people up there that just don't respect the area.... litter, shot up signs and trees and 4x tracks going off trail everywhere... pretty much treating it like a trash dump...
