I'm selling a motorcycle that I own via Craigslists. I bought it via Craigslists some years ago, so my ever-so fading memory isn't helping.

According the CO-DMV website, there's a line at the very bottom of the buying/selling page that states the seller keeps the license plate, however, I don't see how that makes sense.

And I seem to recall that when I bought the bike, the seller signed it over to me, I paid him, and away I went. Once I registered it in my name, I was given new plates.....I think.

If someone buys my motorcycle from me, I know I sign over the title with the odometer reading, but how would the buyer then take the bike to the DMV to register it unless it has a plate on it?

Anyone have any recent experience with this??

Not recent, but I know when I've purchased cars from others or sold cars, the plates did not transfer. I think maybe they *can*, though.

I sold a bike a couple of years ago and the new owner trucked it home without plates. I then bought another one in Woodland Park and the owner let me keep his plate till I got home. But I showed him proof of insurance on the bike. You might assume some liability if the bike is still registered/plated in your name. Also the vehicle does not have to go the DMV to get plates.

I spoke to some other folks and they said the same....keep the plates and let the buyer worry about it. Tks VFR.

The "legal" answer is that they need to get temp tags for it from DMV to drive it anywhere.

The practical answer is to drive it home with no tags, hoping the overactive and over-resourced CSPD Traffic Crimes Unit doesn't catch them and throw them in the gulag.
