Boggsville site

There is also of list of other books on the area there. You'll see references to Boones. They were also part of the Bent/Carson group back to Daniel and his family in MO where they pretty much all came from, except for the Spanish folk already in CO and NM. Very interesting bios on the women.

thanks, I love bios on women. There's is always more interesting to me.

Then here's another excellent book by a woman about her life growing up ranching in the Southwest.

No Life for a Lady by Agnes Morley Cleaveland - Reviews, Discussion, Bookclubs, Lists

As well as Susan Magoffin of course:

Women on the Santa Fe Trail (http://www.sangres.com/history/santafetrail/womenoftrail01.htm - broken link)

Just to set the record straight, Bent's Old Fort is a reconstruction built by the National Park Service in 1975-76 on the site of the original post. So the current fort is on the exact site of the original post, which operated from 1833-1849. When Bent abandoned the post, we believe he did set fire to it, but it was not totally destroyed. The fort was used as a stage station in the 1860s. Eventually the adobe walls did crumble back into the earth, hence the need for later reconstruction. After abandoning the Old Fort, William Bent did later construct another fort - just north of the Arkansas River near the Bent County-Prowers County line (about 40 miles east of the Old Fort). That came to be called Bent's New Fort. -- Rick Wallner, Chief of Interpretation, Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site
