How to avoid being the "ugly Californian" in Colorado?
What do people from California do to draw the ire of natives? I promise not to try to turn Colorado into California.

I think some feel that the price of real estate has gone up because of the influx of Californians, but I don't think the situation is quite that simple.
The mere fact that you posted your query is a step in the right direction, just don't complain about the lack of Trader Joe's and you should be all right.

When we get snow, don't hog the left lane and with white knuckles drive at 10 mph. Do buy a set of winter tires and learn how to drive on slick surfaces.

I have had ZERO negative feedback from people in Colorado. (I moved to near Monument from SoCal in 2006.) It seems like a myth that Colorado people don't like Californians. Maybe ex-Californians get negative feedback in bars, especially sports bars when/if they root for LA Teams over Denver Teams (that used to tick me off back in LA when all the new york and boston transplant weasels rooted for their teams in my stadiums).
Another thing, back in LA I'd see east coast team bumper stickers/license plate frames on lots of vehicles. Even here in the Springs I see east coast team stickers. But I rarely see LA team stickers/license place frames on cars here in Colorado. I found this very surprising considering how many people from SoCal moved to Colorado in the past 20 years.
Lastly, I'd say only a quarter of the people I interface with, work with, or am neighbors with are native (born) people from Colorado. I guess this would somewhat diffuse any passion about being invaded by Californians.
Animosity from Colorado people towards Californians is in the noise. It's a non-issue.

I am a native and it makes not difference to me where someone is from---unless they do as the previous people tell you not to do. Libbers can rub us. And not learned why we do what we do, to just barge in an not ask question. For instance my farrier lives in the mts. Houses are being built near his ranch. They criticized him for always having a rifle in the window of his pickup (not unusual of rural people especially ranchers) They had a tissy because last winter and this spring he has killed 27 coyotes. After live stock. Those people have been feeding them and drawing them in for gosh sakes! They thought different when coyotes came into their yards in broad daylight and killed their standard poodles. ---Don't criticize until you really understand a why or wherefore. Ask questions. So maybe you feel silly doing so but believe me that is better than giving yourself a bad rep. Colorado is not the only state that feels the same way. I maynot be trilled at a Bronco, Rapids, Rockies, Avalanche etc game with someone sitting beside me rooting for the other team but if done in good fun, not die hard, it can be fun.

I do shop at Trader Joe's from time to time but its not something I'd really miss in Colorado.
I plan on taking a winter driving course or at the very least, practicing in an empty parking lot on Sunday mornings and staying to the right lane of public roads until I adapt. I have very limited cold weather driving experience and like to think at least I know that I don't know what I'm doing.
When I was there in May, I needed something to keep the sun off my head so I picked up a Rockies cap at Walmart, not an Angels cap.
I think animals are lower than humans on the food chain and if coyotes are a threat to human life or livelihood, I have no problem with them being killed.
Am I off to a good start?

EscapeCalifornia,
The fact that you seem to care about Colorado is enough. You'll do fine here, don't worry!

Sounds good to me. My family are hunters but for meat, not trophy hunter, I hate trophy hunters! We eat what we hunt. Other than meat animals, I don't like animals killed unless causing problems of some kind. As an example there is a coon that is about to get his tail dusted with my shot gun. He is tearing up gardens and even tore up a screen door trying to get into the porch. I took down bird feeders and squirrel feeders because he was tearing them up. I know he is just after food but enough is enough. He can go back to the river or he is in big trouble. We have used repellents, electric fences etc. Those kind of animals also carry rabies. He is just getting too brave.

Well, as a native I can say that the only people who stick out are the ones who critisize what is different here in a negative way(whether from Califronia or anywhere else)The fact that you are taking the steps to adapt here without complaining is excellant. I think you'll do fine in Colorado. Wish there were more of your types moving here...
