What's maddening is the indifference of the cities who want to build houses, houses, and more houses. There isn't anything I look forward to than Palisade peaches and Olathe sweet corn.
The Elberta peaches that Palisade used to be famous for (and are hardly grown anymore) were delicious and I'm not even a peach fan. Olathe Sweet is flat the best sweet corn there is--period. I know the guy who developed it.
Other disappearing treats--thanks to the !@#$%^&*!!! Front Range cities diverting the irrigation water for municipal use--are those wonderful Rocky Ford watermelons and cantaloupes from the lower Arkansas River Valley in SE Colorado. Of course, we can always eat melons from Mexico--where there are no controls on what kind of pesticides are used, where they could be irrigated with raw human sewage for all we know, and our money goes to another country. But, what the hell, those Front Range dorks need to be able to water their Kentucky Bluegrass lawns, you know.
The orchard industry is dead in Cañon City and has been for years. Any orchards that it was famous for are pretty much long gone. Development took care of most of that, just like is happening in Mesa, Delta, and Montrose Counties. This industry I do know a lot about--a couple of my long-time friends own or manage some of the biggest fruit-packing operations left in Colorado. It's a tragedy that the orchard industry is dying off, but pretending that it's not is deceiving.
golly gosh Jazz,
you must be getting your information from the good ol' boys club who long for the days of horse & buggy...
of course things aren't the way they 'used to be' in terms of the fruit orchards in Canon City, but there are still many functioning here - I drive or walk by them frequently. I also frequent the local Farmer's market which features locally grown produce. The Winery at the Holy Cross Abbey also makes a an apple wine from local apple orchards.
In the fall Colon Orchards does a corn maze and pumpkin patch - in fact, several farms around here do things like that. There are also Mennonite familes that have orchards & fruit trees they farm in and around Canon City.
Not to fear, there are still old fashioned, family-owned farms and orchards alive and well in Canon City. Against all odds, this bizare little place retains it's heritage.
Did I even mention the annual Blossom Festival? or the local grape growers? Or Penrose Apple Days? Have you ever had pie from the Gooseberry Patch - homemade from locally grown fruit?

I live up in colorado springs, and I am just curious.. it appears canon city is about 10 degrees warmer then the springs according to the website here. Does it really feel warmer longer then up in the springs? Does it extend the growing season a bit(gotta think about my pepper plants..lol).
Yes, it is always about 10 degrees warmer in Canon City then in Colo Springs - which is nice in the winter. Canon City's weather is more in line with Pueblo's than the Springs.
It does seem to extend the growing season just that much more.
Spring comes sooner here than in Denver area, that's for sure.
Sometimes I even have flowers coming up in February!
Peach acreage (none of which is in Fremont County) and grape acreages are the only bright spots in fruit production in Colorado these days. Apple and cherry acreages have severely declined in the last few years. And, quite bluntly, Fremont County's share of Colorado fruit production has shrunk to pretty much insignificance, unfortunately.
Generally, i am a pessimistic, glass-half-empty kind of person. But I think I have met my master in Jazzlover! LOL!
Bottom line - for all its touted faults and infamous reputation, the Canon City where i live is peaceful, quiet, lovely.
And you can still purchase fresh, delectable, locally picked apples & cherries.
First, I want to say thanks to all who DM'd me, and responded in the forum to the original post. I feel that there are a lot of friendly folks who are being helpful, and we appreciate it.
While I'm grateful for all who gave me info, in a respectful manner, there seems to be a minor (?) problem.
That problem is a couple of (apparently) senior (by age only) squabblers have pirated the thread! You 2-3-4 folks (and yes, you KNOW who you are) are hilarious in the way you try to knife each other in the ribs, while configuring your messages in kind, (on the surface) banter.
We are trying to find a nice town, with nice folks, as I stated in the (as follows) ORIGINAL POST:
"Anyway, the reason for posting on the this Forum is to ask if there is a town that meets our "wish list" there.
Inexpensive housing.....
low crime rate......
within 1/2 - 3/4 hour to a medical hospital or facility.......
low rainfall (5-20", no more than 20")......
winters mild, with maybe a little snow, but not major packs......
summers between 60-95 day, and 40-60 night.
Everyone likes to think there is a 'perfect' place for their retirement. Some of you will experience that one day. I hope you can find the info you're asking for. This forum provides a lot of insight and 'feel' for places, when the posters respond genuinely. We have done lots of investigating, and have narrowed our list to about 4-5 spots.
Just trying to find a "Happy Place" to finish out our years! Have heard lots of referrals to CO, but I thought price would keep us out. We need to find a clean small home for $100-120K. You know, we are NOT looking for a Chamber of Commerce "everything's rosy and wonderful" type of reply.....just the truth. If its nice, we will definitely put it on the "Go to see it" short list. If there are real problems with the town, please let us know that, also.
Thanks for the help.
Fred
If you got nothin nice to say, go kick your horse.
And if that offends you who are involved with blatantly hating Rio Rancho, GOOD!
If you could please help, we would be grateful, and try to 'pay it forward' when someone asks for help from us.
And again, to all of the sincere posters, thanks again.

Yeah, I'm sure I'm one of the guys you refer to. Here's the deal: All the questions you've asked can be answered with a little cursory research, much of it right here on City-Data. You don't even have to ask us!
Climate (everything you've asked about and more)? Go here: Weatherbase
Distance to major medical, etc.? Google maps will get it fer ya.
Now, while some of us may disagree with one another on aspects of one community or another, and debate vigorously about it, you should appreciate that as it gives you a more rounded view of a place. That is the point of a forum. If you are not comfortable with that, go to the sites mentioned above, do the research, and form your own conclusions. If you come here to ask, you are asking for people's opinions, and you shouldn't be upset when you get them--or when those expressing them happen to disagree with one another.

Weatherbase seems informative, so no contention there, but it needs further checking.
Crime? Right here on City-data.
City-Data is mostly old (2-5 years) and does amediocre job in their crime index. I like calling 2-3 LEO offices.
Housing prices? Here on City-data. Or go to the County Assessor's website. Colorado is a public disclosure state on real estate sales prices. ( Welcome to the Fremont County Assessor's Office Website! )
Foolish, and for folks wearing blinders. There are homes sitting vacant RIGHT now in your town. Running a three-day ad in the paper will often find a place on the brink. I have listings in Canon showing at $70K. Put 20 with it, and you are in a nice 3/2.

HHmmmm. I wonder who helped you when you were trying to gather info that is tedious and time consuming. See, the deal is, I can (and have) spend hours looking for an item, or I can ask if any good people on the forum know of the info I'm searching for, and how to get to it. You teach no one any lessons here, by your method of scolding folks for being too lazy to look things up, and state it in a way that indicates YOU know how to find it, where it is, but you are unwilling to help. When in reality, helping others is the plan I try to use. Maybe thats just your personality. If I were to see you drowning in a lake, do you think I should call out to you, "kick your legs, keep your head down, turn your head to the side and breathe, etc?" Or would you be happier if I threw you a rope?
Now, while some of us may disagree with one another on aspects of one community or another, and debate vigorously about it, you should appreciate that as it gives you a more rounded view of a place. You bickering about the demise of the fruit industry, in fact, has ZILCH to do with the post.
That is the point of a forum. You are entirely wrong. This is a FORUM, not a debate. Forums are a place people come to learn and gather information.
If you are not comfortable with that, go to the sites mentioned above, do the research, and form your own conclusions. It is YOU who should go, and find a nice guessing-game, cantankerous back-and-forth place to 'teach those too lazy to look things up. BTW, Carnac, I did search-how do you suppose I got to this forum? Now YOU should take a lesson, and get it through your head, that if you can contribute to a discussion, then feel free to do so. If you just feel like contradiction people, and offering nothing but your myopic viewpoint and arguments, then take off, and find a more suitable group!
If you come here to ask, you are asking for people's opinions, and you shouldn't be upset when you get them--or when those expressing them happen to disagree with one another.
In your posts, there are about 3 lines of opinion, and 330 lines of unintelligible contradictions.
Have a fun day!
