Yeah I suppose better he goes off the road in Utah and turns around then get close to Montreal and realize ice on the road doesn't come with flashing lights on it to warn you.

The I-70 route is highly variable in the winter. You'll need to check the weather about a day before you hit the Rockies and make arrangments to take an alternate route if a winter storm is expected. I-70 can be dry and easy to drive, or it can be with blizzard conditions and very very slow. Extreme winter storms will shut down I-70 between Grand Junction and Denver.
