Default The Revitalization of Canon City

Canon City has a plan to revitalize the historic downtown area of the city. This article was recently in the Canon City Daily Record:

Cañon City Daily Record - Public views conceptual drawings for Main Street (http://www.canoncitydailyrecord.com/Top-Story.asp?ID=14377 - broken link)

Art & aesthetics are the centerpiece of this plan. Seems like the locals are coming together to showcase what a neat place Canon City is. I think it is long overdue - people need to take pride in this community and celebrate what we have instead of being wieghed down by the nay-sayers (you know who you are: "scruffy brown prison town" )

Also, planning continues for the projected 2013 date of world famous artist Christo's Over The River Installation which will be just west of Canon City along the Arkansas River. It is good to see the city and business leaders get behind this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

I for one, am glad to see that perhaps Canon City is turning the page on it's infamous reputation as the scruffy little Colorado Prison Town.

Thoughts?

(ps. hi Shannon )

Nay sayer, you wouldn't be talking about me? Canon City, it is scruffy, it is brown and it is a prison town.

I would say find the money and build it. Sounds nice on paper. They need all the help they can get.

IMHO, the Christo thing, well I think there is nothing dumber I have ever seen or heard then all his silly draping of nature in orange cloth. Dumbest thing I have ever heard. [ mod cut ]

Actually, the cloth will be a white-ish, iridescent, see-through type thing. I think it will be quite beautiful. It is an honour that Christo chose this area.

And have you been to CC lately? It certainly is not brown and scruffy with all this rain we have been getting! This place is in full bloom! Allergy season GALORE!

Must admit I haven't read much about the Christo 'Over the River' project but I thought all their projects were of orange cloth. Is this one different than all the rest for environmental reasons perhaps? Agree that revitalization for CC will be a good thing.

No, I think Christo has done some pink wrappings of islands... i don't think he is partial to orange. I don't recall for sure, but I believe I read somewhere that the reason for the light coloured, translucent fabric on Over The River project is so that rafters on the river can see up through to the sky as they go under.

Well enjoy all that toilet paper fluttering around.

I've been going through Canon City all my life. It's not like a family favorite though. No one says, "hey let's go to Canon City today, YEA!". But last time was 2006.

In all seriousness if you like it and it works for you, then enjoy. We all have our likes and dislikes.

If I can figure out how to take a picture of my view out of my window and post it, I will prove how very green it is here in Canon!!!! It not the Pueblo/Penrose scrub brush area ya' know?! That's why people are so shocked when they drive from those areas and come into Canon and see all of the green!

LOL! Of course no one says that. It's like saying: "Let's go commit a felony and hang out in prison!" Or so that's what people think, when they hear the name Canon City.

I think the point of revitalizing the historic downtown and showcasing how neat this area is, is to tell the world that Canon City is much more than just the prisons.

And, there are many fun family activities here, the newest one being the kayak & recreation park right in Canon City. I was there the other day with my kids and they loved it.

I think this all sounds great. I wish the locals all the best.
They could and should look a bit at what Grand Junction has done with it's DT area which is also very impressive and user friendly.
