Um I discovered that homes with only 40 acres are subdivisions here, 5 acres is a lot. Oh and I sure hope they don't 4 lane hwy 50, that would be awful. We can't 4 and 8 lane everything, lets leave some 2 lane mountain roads. People can slow down, it's not necessary to drive 80mph everyplace you go.

Its not a matter of "if" but "when" they 4 lane highway 50 as it is the second most important east - west highway in the state connecting the rural areas on both side of the rocky mountains to the Front Range urban Corridor. In fact CDOT is already working on a plan to make the highway 4 lanes on the eastern plains with some limited access areas to help the flow of traffic and make the highway safer. Don't worry though there will still be plenty of single lane highways in the state for people who prefer to drive on them instead of major highways.

CDOT doesn't even have enough money long-term to meet the maintenance needs of the existing roadways. I'm pretty sure bringing highway 50 to 4 lanes all the way from Pueblo to Salida is an extremely low priority project.

Now if you're willing to make it a for-profit tollway you might be able to get it done.

[quote=cmiller1014;15708795]Salida.... have heard a lot about Salida now. Will have to look into the climate.

The town of Salida gets barely any snow at all in fact they call it "The banana belt" This is why you can ride your bike all year round. Now if you want to get 40 acres in the surrounding area the climate can be tricky. The Collegiate Peaks all of which are over 14,000 feet are to the west/north of Salida. The Sangre Cristos are to the south. It is a Beautiful area! Monarch Ski resort , which is only about 30 minutes away, always has some of the highest snow totals (all natural) in the state every year exceeding over 400 inches, while the town of Salida may only get around 50 inches! Huge difference!

A quick check of realtor.com reveals that the 40 to 50 acre lot with home costs about a million or so in the area, with a house on it aleady.

As Jazzlover has posted before, the (most) of the success stories in Mountain Colorado involve deep pocket and a bank account with lots of zeros to the right of the number.

The OP must be one of those types if they are looking for a 40 to 50 acre lot. That's what they cost in the Buena Vista / Salida area. They don't look remote either. Some of them have appear to have a view of a neighbor's house.

Amen to that. The stupidest thing Colorado could do is invest one more nickel in highway expansion. There is not enough money to maintain what is here now--and there never will be. If the slew of proposed Constitutional Amendments on this November's ballot pass, not only will there be no new highway expansion, but a lot of existing highways will "regress." It would not surprise me in the least to see some state highways that are now open year-round regress to summer-only status, and many county and local roads going back to gravel from pavement. That is already happening in some rural counties. The people who think that we can endlessly expand both our road system and the miles we drive on them are fools, and are a pernicious group that are helping drive (literally) this country off of a economic and social cliff. They will come to be thoroughly despised and reviled for what they have done to this country. Colorado would be truly a visionary state if it would wholly reject their mantra and move toward workable transportation policies based on things other than sole dependence on autos and trucks for transportation needs.

The best thing that could help the US50 corridor is to re-open the railroad corridor paralleling it and US24 from Pueblo to Dotsero and encourage (through incentives and/or taxes) its use for intermodal transportation. Getting even some trucks off of that highway corridor would help the traffic situation immensely. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has taken this approach on some of its transportation corridors with considerable success. It's a whole lot cheaper to use and maintain existing rail corridors than to build more highways.

CDOT also plans to 4 or 6 lane hwy 62 through Ridgway with bike paths turning lanes. Seriously, why? There's no traffic here.

Not rich by any means... in fact, we're looking to rent for under $1500 / month. The only reason Salida was on the list was because I have been contacted by other members on 30-40 acres there paying under $1500.

In your original post, you didn't say you wanted to rent, you wanted something remote. Usually remote, which really doesn't exist in Colorado, is rarely for rent.

A couple of people (hippies) I know in Poncha Springs advise me 50 acres for rent is pretty unusual. They did say 1500 a month might get a really nice place but not with that much acerage and you will have neighbors.

Remote doesn't exist that close to Denver. Someone on this post mentioned Collbran which is about 50 miles or so east of Grand Junction. That might be considered somewhat remote. It's pretty small I don't know what the rental market is like there.

Thanks Zias. Yes I am looking to rent. A user in Salida really got my hopes up after she found a 40 acre horse ranch for rent for $1500. It had been on the marker for so long, that she ended up getting it for $1000.
