Perhaps you didn't grow up in the Southeastern section of the state.

Why Kansans call it Ar Kansas

How do they pronounce it in Pweeblo ? I know some Kansans settled there.

Good lord, I just looked at the poll and the number of voters pronouncing our state name wrong is now in the majority. I can't tell you how overjoyed I am whenever I hear anyone in the public eye (TV/Radio) pronounces our state name correctly. I usually figure someone who actually knows the correct way had coached them beforehand but you never know.

There's an announcer on PBR locally who used to say Co-lo-rah-do. I researched and found out he was from Ohio ('natch). I emailed him and begged him to say it right. And yesterday I heard him saying it correctly. I wonder if it was my coaching? Now he needs to work on Anna Fanocha's botching of our state name.

Co-lo-ra-do. Never Co-lo-rah-do. Never, unless you're speaking Spanish which I do but so what, when I speak English it's Co-lo-ra-do. Hey, I didn't bring this thread back up.

And it's Pee-yeb-blow to the natives there. Don't ask me why, I still say Pueblo.

Everyone keeps spelling the correct pronunciation as Co-lo-ra-do, but that doesn't help me much in this reading environment. Do you mean Co-lo-ray-do? Is that the correct pronunciation? I'm originally from the east coast (just moved here recently), and I've always called it Co-lo-rah-do. I've not a bit of Spanish in my blood or surroundings, but that's how we've always said it where I grew up (Connecticut).

So, please help me out. Is it "ray"?

I know you're just funnin' with me but: Co-lo-rah-do is wrong, because the "rah" is pronounced like the "o" in "rod". OK. I'm not surprised somebody from out of state thinks that's the correct way to say it.

Now, ray, well, ray is pronounced like ray so, no, that's wrong too.

Gee, that leaves us with Co-lo-ra-do where the "ra" is pronounced like (drumroll please....wait for it...) the "ra" in "radical". Trust me, that's the correct way to say our state name.
