How do you guys pronounce "Colorado?" Is it Col-o-rod-o or Col-o-rad-o? I have heard natives pronounce it both ways, so I gather that there could be no consensus on correct pronunciation. It's interesting to hear the endless political ads where the state is pronounced both ways. I sayColo-o-rod-o. While not perfect, it seems more closely aligned with the Spanish pronunciation of the word. Col-o-rad-o sounds like nails on a chalkboard.

What say you guys?

Sorry if the topic has been beaten to death.

I think there was another fairly recent thread and there was no consensus as there would be for Oregon or Nevada. To me it's "rad" man.

Look at the spelling. It's spelled ColorAdo. Not ColorOdo.

I've heard Col-a-rad-A a lot in these parts. Now try Uncompaghre, Montrose, or Ouray.

Default An Inconvenient Truth

There are plenty of examples of words not being in complete step phonetically with their spelling especially if the word is not originally English.

Colorado happens to be of Spanish origin as is desperado, macho, armada, avacado, posada. I do not speak very fluent Spanish but it seems Spanish words with an "a" are pronounced as "ah" or "od" in this case as opposed to "rad" .

If you listen to local Newscasters, regional commercials and promotional advertisements, lines is songs, etc, Colo"rod"do is utilized most often.

The "rad" is some Spanish words is simply a way they are absorbed and used in English.

Cabana, originally a Spanish word, is pronounced cab"ah"na in Spanish but most English speaking people say cabAna.

To each their own.

I always pronounced it Colo"rod"do and most people I know do as well. That is in no way an endorsement that it is correct. If anyone ever tried to correct me I would just tell them to kiss my Ah$$.

Cheers.

Co-lo-rrrah-dough. It's a damn Spanish word. If your going to steal it at least pronounce it correctly.
