Wink Why, but of course

Au contraire. There are several places in Telluride with rooms under $500. The least expensive I found in a quick search was the Mountainside Inn:
Mountainside Inn (Telluride, CO) - Hotel Reviews - TripAdvisor

Trip Advisor has it generically listed at $220 per night. I did a check for 7 nights, beginning tomorrow, Monday. One then needs to check specifically. That returned various rates from different providers, all about the same. Expedia is asking $177.57 per night for a hotel room there. Then, of course, add taxes. At the same location, a one bedroom condo is listed at $386.89. Also be aware these prices are an average of 7 nights, since prices vary by day, a selection of different dates can return a different overall price.

Before checking, I would have guessed your supposition about prices in Telluride was correct. The suggestion then to try something out of town. There are a few things, but the problem and also advantage of Telluride is that it is so isolated. There might be one or two lodges in Sawpit. Rico is farther removed, and also on the far side of the pass, but if you found lodging there, probably decidedly less expensive.
