You might check out this location: Ranch Of The Rockies - Online News (http://www.rotr.org/root/ - broken link) It's between Fairplay and Buena Vista off of Hwy. 9. I know it says Hartsel, but really it's the very south end of there are actually quite a few forested plots of land. My parents own a place up there and I actually lived in it while I was working for the Forest Service in Fairplay. It's a beautiful location, peaceful, and affordable compared to many places in the mountains of Colorado. You would be right at about 2 hours from Vail.

I have a similar hope of spending summers in Colorado in retirement. After a lot of going back and forth (and buying and selling two semi-remote properties in Ridgway) I decided that the thing to do is to rent every summer when I can. Cost it out- even if costs, say, $10K for a summer's rental (just throwing out a number) how many summers would it take before *any* purchase (with taxes, upkeep etc.) broke even?
That's my decision for myself, anyway. If I had summers off while working, I'd be doing it right now, well, right now starting this summer. In fact, I so wish my job allowed it now, because I really loathe summer where I am (Massachusetts) and don't see myself living in Colorado in a working life.
I'm starting to think that we all want two lives in one year!

Silver Plume (west of Georgetown) has very good prices on sfh. It's 50 miles..1 hour to Vail. Google real estate there and you will see what I mean...cute little main street too!!
