The point of that article wasn't to debate city vs suburban living, it was point out that rural areas declined in population, and suggested they moved to more populous areas. This same thing has/is happening here in Iowa. The small farm towns are losing population, and they are shifting to the more populous cities. It has to do more with adequate jobs more than anything else.

That's been happening for at least 150 years. Mechanization of farms meant fewer hands were needed. Just as importantly was the rise of the industrial era of modern productivity. People left rural areas to work steady indoor jobs as city living offered better conditions, wages and stability than being stuck on a farm out in the boonies. Still going on to some extent.
