If you're familiar with Ansel Adams's work, you'll have seen his dark, almost black skies. Basically it's the same effect, except instead of using film and chemicals, I'm using pixels and digital conversions. I use a different color -> black-&-white conversion than what you get by default. Below is an example I posted in another thread...

For instance, here's a color image:

If I do a regular, default desaturate using Photoshop, here's what I get -- kind of bland:

But if instead I use the Channel Mixer (Gray output channel, 100% Red source channel), this is what I get -- quite a difference, wouldn't you say?
