We have a soon-to-be adult son who is mentally retarded, and we are considering a move to the Springs to be near family. We live in another state. Right now he is on a Medicaid waiver program and the services we get are such a blessing.... And now we're considering moving out of state!!! How does Colorado handle caring for special-needs adults? How easy is it to get services moving into the state? How do we get "plugged in"? He is a delightful young man, but he will always need assistance as an adult.... both physically and financially....

Reason: clear things up
This would be a terrible move for your family. I have an adult daughter, down's syndrome and blind, and she is # 50 something on the waiting list for services in Denver, she has been on that list for 5 years with no change in position. She has been in school since 3rd grade in this state. As soon as my second kid is out of college, I am moving.
Colorado is on record as being one of the Worst states for services to persons with disabilities.

Reason: forgot something
Lots of Con-Servatives in Colorado. Like Bush, they'll say you ought to just have a savings account to deal with your own medical problems. No Socialism for us!

It's all about me!
Not We.
Look for a more compassionate State.
I think it's fair to expect that someone seriously in need of a special-needs support capability go to a place where that capability...you know...actually exists.
It's not reasonable to expect that support of this kind be made available everywhere just because you decided you want to live there (here). The U.S. has a plethora of good places for that sort of support. It's a giant foul to expect that everywhere should be one of those places.
Handicapped parking in front of the gym has always been one of those things that makes me go "hmmmmmmm." Who wants to spend $50,000 of someone else's money to put a wheelchair ramp leading to a dance parlor in a small town with one 80-something that actually uses a wheelchair? A liberal, that's who.

Well Bob, I hope neither you nor anybody in your family ever needs support.
The surest way to turn a right winged conservative into a flaming Liberal is to have him personally deal with a significant health care problem.

I am one of those people who use that handicapped parking in front of the "gym". There is no need for a "hmmmmmmmm" needed by you. Recreation Centers in this area are a good place for many challenged people to go.
There are exercise actiivities and in pool exercise classes that help with arthritic limbs. There are classes in all type of activities that the handicapped and the aged can participate. There are ice arenas where I have watched wheel chaired people engaged in ice hockey.
Are you saying because someone is so severely handicapped that they have trouble walking to the building that they cannot engage in activities to help them physical and socially?? Is that what you are saying???
Oh, you said "Gym"--today we have multiple functioning recreation centers that cater to all ages and all capabilities. Where have you been???? Certainly not in a "modern recreation center", that would not fit your moniker.
Are we to deny easy access to children, adults and the aged who have physical problems because it would make you walk farther???
Dance Parlor???? You know that many people can enjoy dancing, even if they cannot dance. People who need help walking cannot engage in the social aspects of a "Dance Parlor"??? Think about that when you drive up to your local "gentleman club" and stumble belly first, out of your truck---you can enjoy all those girls around the pole, and all you have to do is sit there, leering and sucking beer.
You statements are a comical representation of a "Bob from Down South"---I know that you are trying to pretend to be the "white southern trash redneck"--I understand the humor, very funny.

This is a typical republican response. You know the same one that has no problem with Halliburton fleecing america with $500 toilet seats, sewage water for our troops, 1800 ghost meals and so forth yet lets not pay for someone elses handicapped child. Furthermore the same republican response to push pro life no abortion even in cases of rape and incest yet when that child is here the family is on there own. This is the typical response I have to deal with everyday in this red kneck state of colorado.

I deal with attitudes like Bob from the South here locally all the time. When I first moved into Pueblo West, I had several people coming to me askingme if I was a christian and if I would like to attend there church. They were pro Bush and Pro Life. I know because they always pushed it on me. When same fake christians learned more about my nonverbal autistic son, they turned on me. They said he belongs in a institution not with me. They told me to stop taking my sick child over my healthy 3 other children and my husband. OH yes I know these republican Bush lovers all too well. Bless if I ever sell that house in Pueblo west now.
