I thought I would post an update for others reading this post. We just returned and loved Evergreen. We also liked Golden but nothing compares to Evergreen. The best way to describe it is like a National Park with homes scattered around. Our favorite area of Evergreen is the Bergen Park area which is North Evergreen close to I-70. There are restaurants, grocery stores, and banks scattered around the area and small main street with a lake close by. I looked up on mapquest driving time from one of the houses we liked to Colorado Mills mall and it is only an 18 minute drive and 12 miles away.

They are. My aunt lived in Golden for several years. Liked it a lot. (She's in Trinidad now due to the need for more acreage for her ranch.)

I personally like Evergreen more (think it's prettier) but spent so little time there, mostly just passing through.

Lastly, our budget is anywhere from $400,000 to $600,000. Hopefully that's enough info about us to get started.
Consider the mountain areas of Littleton, which are very pretty, and acreage last time I checked (last year) was about $200,000k for 10 acres (land only.) Use that a base to start.

Excellent choice - Evergreen is fantastic!
The only downside is commuting in a winter snow storm.
