Our family is seriously considering relocating to the Front Range area and we're looking for the best town for us...we like bike paths/trails, town activities, being able to walk to a lot of things/places and being close to the foothills (but not in them). Of primary importance is the best public schools, but we also need a place that isn't astronomically expensive. One of us works in tech...software operations.

Hard nut to crack, isn't it? We would appreciate any and all ideas and imput. Thanks so much!

This school business comes up all the time. Here's some information about schools.

Another thing is that Colorado has a school equalization funding act that works to keep per-pupil spending fairly equal between districts. It's not perfect, but it helps.

Therefore, there's not this intense "good district/bad district" stuff there is in the NE states.
I will add, the two school districts in Boulder County are Boulder Valley Boulder Valley School District and St. Vrain St Vrain Valley School District

Katiana, thank you for the links! I really appreciate it. I've checked out greatschools.com and schooldigger.com of course, but personal information is really helpful too.

Fort Collins (Poudre Valley) schools also rank well. My wife volunteered at elementaries there and was quite impressed with the range of programs and emphasis on individual thought.

We live in the Skyway neighborhood of Colorado Springs. Houses range from @ $200K (smaller, older) to @ $1Million (bigger, newer, higher up hill). The local school district (D12) seems to be ranked among the top two or three districts in the state. Can't be much closer to hiking/biking trails (for some, trails to open-space are literally right on backyard). 10-15 minute drive to downtown. Pretty nice lifestyle if one can make it work. Hope you find a place/area that fits!

You could consider living in an inner neighborhood of Castle Rock. There are tech jobs in Castle Rock and there is would be possible to commute north or south if desirable or necessary.
