My boyfriend and I are wanting to relocate to Colorado. We are in our mid-thirties and are not planning on starting a family. We would like a town that is diverse with cultural things to do as well as access to several outdoor activities near by. We are both graduated from college so not looking to "party", but do enjoy good beer and microbrews. I am a physical therapist and he will need opportunity to start his business of parking lot maintenance (i.e. striping, asphalt, concrete etc) and snow plowing over. We like homes with "character". We make descent salaries, but it looks as if we cannot afford Boulder's cost of living. Any input/opinions would be much appreciated.

If you can afford Colorado, you can afford Boulder. Don't let anyone tell you it's totally out of the question for you.

Most towns in colorado are close to mountains and outdoor activities so you don't have to worry about that (except the eastern plains.)

All the forementioned towns have good microbrew; don't have to worry about that.

As for "cultural" things to do, that's where it gets scarce. You're limited to Denver, Boulder and Colorado Springs.

I still say Denver is the best and that is why I suggested downtown Denver but Pueblo and Fort Collins have just as much cultural events as the Springs and Boulder.

Well, it's about 5 times that big, but it seems like a smaller city in many ways. It's not so full of high rises and the like as other big cities. Granted, there are some, but there are also lots of single family houses right in the city, apartments with little courtyards, and so forth.

Thanks for that added information as a persons "big" city can mean many things.

Given this new information I would suggest Pueblo or Boulder. Boulder is more liberal and closer to Denver so it is under 100,000 people but it seems bigger. Pueblo is a democratic city of 110,000 people and 100 miles south of Denver so it's warmer yet for a city of its size has many cultural events, (plays and the theator and our own symphony) and restaurants. In fact this week the wild west fest starts and it will have a PBR event shown all over the world and a concert at the state fair events center. Pueblo is also home to the state fair, Colorado's largest single event.

For information on Boulder I suggest looking in the Boulder sub forum and for Pueblo look at the Pueblo and southern Colorado page or feel free to ask me anything...

we'll be out there all next week. i have job interviews in lafayette, westminster and denver. my first instinct makes me want to go to boulder, but a great website (payscale.com) allows you to type in your profession in your town and compares it to what you would need to make in the town you want to move to. i would need to make $22,000 more to live the same lifestyle in boulder????

If you are looking at the denver metro area I still suggest you look at downtown Denver to see if you like it or not.
