ok hows this, most the foreclosures in this state were owned by former Californians. My Dad worked in until his 7th heart attack. He would tell me stories Californians and homes. He said many felt they could afford a house here better than back home, but they would borrow on their house and end up upside down. The ofcourse after they finally got them out they would leave the homes trashed.

He said in the 80's it was Canadians who were stock brokers and a bunch moved into Cherry hills, only intended to stay in Denver for 2 years. Never made a payment and up and left overnight. They couldn't get them out of the house and they knew it.

So it's not one person.

I'm sorry for your loss of your father.

I still don't think that one, or even a few, experiences with Californians, Canadians, etc speaks for all of them.

You quoted a post I edited. I don't have a problem with that, but thought I'd explain to others who are reading it.

Everyone has their biases, but not everyone excoriates ALL Californians, ALL Texans, etc. based on experience with a few.

The anti-Calfornia sentiment on this thread is ridiculous.

I do not think you'll find any stats that "prove" most of the stuff that's been said about Californians on this thread. Maybe you have some?

I can get them. I didn't say all Texans, maybe someone else did. Texans seem to know how to manage their money better, they buy homes they can actually afford.

Would it help if I popped in to say that this former Californian is completely debt-free and owns a very nice and well-tended little house in the south metro not far from you, Cupcake?

Nah, I didn't think so.

My neighborhood is filled with ex-Californians. Truly, you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting one, and many of us have been here for years. We have jobs, volunteer in the schools, pay our taxes, and mow our lawns on Saturday morning just like you.

I seriously doubt there's much difference in the values systems of the average resident in the L.A., San Francisco, Denver, or even my own Northern Virginia suburbs. They pretty much all want the same things: good roads, good schools, decent dining, recreation, and shopping options, fulfilling jobs, and attractive crime-free neighborhoods. Those are things they can find in your state, which makes it an attractive place. You probably couldn't even distinguish between these folks unless they told you where they came from.

Unfortunately, most bring their voting habits with them.

I don't know why other people move here, but we moved to Colorado for a job, and because it allowed us to be closer to members of our very small extended family who retired to the Denver metro in the early '80s. I suspect that two more members of our family will be headed here in the next couple of years for similar reasons.

Honestly, I don't see myself staying here for the rest of my life. I grew up in a military family and so did my spouse, and I've had the opportunity to live in many beautiful places. (My favorite and the place I lived longest as an adult was northern California, thus my username.) We'll stay here until our kids are out of school, but once they are on their own, I suspect my wanderlust will get the best of me and we'll be off on a new adventure.

Furthermore, I'll speak kindly of my years in the Centennial state and its people when I'm gone, just as I do about all the other places and people I've known, California and Californians included.
