Cortez is much more affordable than Durango, and closer to Shiprock. 491 isn't TOO bad; much better than 140 which is what you would have to take if you lived closer to Mancos. But both roads can be really icy with high winds. Farmington would be your best place to live, to commute to Shiprock. On the "outskirts" you could find a place with some wide-open views. Actually, Shiprock has some great views, but I can understand not wanting to live there full time. Check around Farmington; you might be surprised at what is available there.

I drove from Durango to Four Corners this past August. Roads were in excellent shape. It appeared that they were just resurfaced.

Anytime one drives such a desolate stretch of road they must show extreme care. Not only are drunk drivers a problem, but fatigued drivers as well. While I find the landscape beautiful, it does get hypnotic/monotonous and can cause drowsiness/sleepiness.
