FYI: Loveland is closer to Denver metro area; it's on the east side of the Eisenhower tunnel.

A-Basin is about 20-30 minutes farther than Loveland (depending on whether the Pass is open or not) from Denver.
A-Basin is smaller than Loveland. Not a TON of easy terrain, but great advanced/expert skiing. With the Basin being part of the Colorado Pass, it is also generally busier than Loveland.
Loveland seems to have more easy terrain than the Basin. But the advanced/expert terrain is nothing to scoff at. Lots of great stuff off Chairs 1 and 9 (especially if you don't mind hiking for the goods).
If I lived in Denver and had to pick one, I'd pick Loveland -- closer, bigger, less crowded (making it easier to learn).
However, if you're buying an A-Basin pass as part of the CO Pass, then the added benefit of skiing Breck, Keystone, Vail/BC may be more attractive. Although, if you're just learning, I'd say a single-area pass may be more useful -- you won't be able to really explore all the areas fully anyway.
