What time of year to vacation in the Dolores area? (Durango: motels, restaurants)

My family and I are planning to vacation in Dolores next year and are unsure of what month would be best. Right now we are thinking either Aug or Sept but are open to other months as well.

We plan on visiting Telluride, Durango and a few other cities while we are there and would like to hike and go rafting.

What month would suit us best? Thanks for your help!

I would do early to mid September. I know Dolores well, I've fished the river and surrounding reservoirs for many moons. I worked as a laborer for the USFS in the late 60's, was based there for a few months. Prices may not be necessarily cheaper though regarding motels, but there are enough rooms there. Cortez is 12 miles south and if you're getting down on groceries that would be your best bet as groceries in Dolores are high.

With the depression, er recession going on Dolores took a hit right along with other small towns on Colorado's western slope. Lots of small stores and a few restaurants finally shut down.

Mesa Verde National Park is a little over a half hour south and is one of the crown jewels of the National Park system. Another item that is worth your while for a visit is the Anazasi museum, not far from town.

Dolores is a nice little town and yes has been hit by the recession. Sept sounds perfect for a visit. their grocery store is great in my opinion. I work there sometimes and stop in to check it out and always leave with a good purchase.I miss the giant Sporting goods store that is now boutiques,so sad
