What is the story on 1 car garages?
I have been looking for houses in Colorado for a while now and I notice a lot of houses with 1 car garages? Are there a lot of families that only have one car? I don't see this a lot in the newe houses, but I do occassionally see them there too.

Depends on when the house was built - it was only affordable to have one car in the past.

It will come to the time when people will not own two or more big cars. If they do have more than one--it will be smaller cars---which take less space and a single car garage may hold two or more of them.
Would it not be nice, if we had no need for a garage--because we will need no cars. Garage conversions will come the rage. Oh, would it not be nice....

another thought may be that garages really raise the taxes and many of us just as soon keep them down anyway we can.

Not for me. I love cars. My dream home comes with an attached plane hanger . Big enough for a bunch of cars and maybe a plane or 2.

Our first house was built in 1978, most definitely a 'starter' home. It had a one car garage. The houses in the development all had options of 1, 1 1/2, or two car garages when they were built. Even into the 80s, houses were built with one car garages. The main reason was cost. Over the last number of years, two car garages have become the norm, except for condos/townhouses, some of which only have one car garages.

One car garage is not common? How about house without car garage!
I visited a friend's house last month. That is a street with most houses built about 60 years ago and most these old, small houses have one car garage. Since house footage is small, many owners converted the only garage into a bedroom or a play room. Then, many cars park along the street. They have a tradition to park the car: right side of the car on the walk way and left side of the car down the street. (to save more space for the street?). The image looks like this is an old, crowded poverty area. But don't be surprised, the lowest priced house here is over 1.1 million. This is a street in Palo Alto, CA.

My first home was built in 81 and had a two car garage. Maybe older homes or smaller homes had the one car garage and may or may not have had a doorway into the home.
It seems like the norm today is a three car garage so you can park your SUV in it maybe, and have your lawn mower and Christmas decorations and junk taking up the rest of the space.

We have a tiny, one car garage but our house was built in 1958. However, we do only have one car - a Subaru - and it *barely* fits in the garage. It's kinda quaint, but I hate it when the next door neighbor, who has FIVE cars parks on the street in front of our house.

My dad would love that. He likes to collect cars and has managed to squeeze 4 cars into a 2 car garage (hydraulic lifts). Then he keeps another in a car trailer.
Personally, I haven't seen many 1 car garages here (saw many more in San Diego). Even my grandparent's home in Aurora had a two car garage and they had lived in that house since the early 60's. All the homes that I grew up in here (and there were several) had at least a 2 car garage.
Our house in San Diego, built in 1959, had a two car garage but it had been converted to a family room (brought it up to a whopping 1300 sqft). Many others in that neighborhood were converted as well. Personally, I would rather have a garage. Now I have a 4 car garage (without lifts). I don't miss that old cramped house one bit.
