I can't believe there is no mention of what you do for a living or your rental or house price budget in this post. What research have you already done? What does "not too expensive" mean? You don't want anything expensive but you are going to stay home and let the wife and kids go to malls?

It is interesting that malls and shops are mentioned but not school districts.

theriles10 - If you can get past livediscontent's tone (he loves to scold, lecture, judge and preach) he does have a point, as does Charles. Perhaps you're just at the fantasy stage of moving, and there's nothing wrong with that. But reality is already rearing it's head. The truth is that there are minorities everywhere in the US, so many that added all together they may soon outnumber us whites. And that should, with any luck, be a good thing, making us more tolerant and accepting -- or at least increasing and improving the kinds of restaurants we can choose from.

I run a call center in Boulder (a city that many believe is totally vanilla white) and a solid third of my 37 employees are Hispanic (not just Mexicans), Black and Asian -- and they do as good a job, and are as pleasant and interesting to be around, as the whites. We're all just ordinary people with pretty much the same beliefs and goals -- trying to make a living, raise our kids and enjoy life.

Whites in this country have, as a group, been given an amazing headstart towards success. So I gotta just admire anyone who bucked the odds and has become a productive American of color.

i remeber when i was in the fantasay stage of moving its all the nice stuff that your thinkin about colorado like the mtns u wanna live in and the new people ur gonna meet the snow u gonna get and the boarding your gonna do when u get a few days of work, then reality set in BIG time for me, i drove to Evergreen and sure enoughfound tons of private renters renting at prices i could afforrd but then you see how far you are from anyone who has ever cared about you and you see your gonna have to get another job ( two in my case 50 hrs a week) at least to make it work, and you also think about how your going to have to trust people and hope no one takes advantage of you because your new to an area, so many things hit you after the fantasay stage, but i am in the reality happy stage now i am prepared to work my rear off and pay my bills i am ready for the unknown as best i can be being so far from where i called home for 18 years...in the end i still cant wait to get there theriles you should defenitly visit metro denver before u move there make sure it is really wat u want!! good luck!

We had taken a trip out there in august and thought as bad as people said the traffic was bad there it still paled in comparison to SW florida in the winter....As far as the mexicans go, I have nothing against them since I live amongst a lage percentage here in florida except the fact that they stare my wife down(makes her nervous) and taking food out of my kids mouths because of their ridiculous low wages(thats right I also am a blue collar worker who has to compete with their slave wages). If your the type who doesn't mind them around then it is because they don't take food out of your kids mouths!! In fact you probably have them on your payroll in some way shape or form doing work for half the price an avg. AMERICAN would charge !!! So, please don't lecture me on their just like us !!!! BS !! With the economy getting worse in the US its the american upper class who is allowing them to co-exist because you elect to have them work instead of a us citizen..I know they too have children too feed but I'm just painting he reality of the dire situation we face in this country not taking a stand at our borders and deporting those who aren't legit....Colorado from what we saw when we visited didn't have enough mexicans(at this point) to effect my livelyhood...visit florida and you will see what I'm talking about....Basically what I do and My wife does for a living allows us to live almost anywhere we want with some type of population in striking distance...The main reasons we are looking into your state is because of 2 major things:1. we love the outdoors 2. We love mega sunshine but minus the humidity completely and states like CO, WY, ID, SD offer those things....If we make the move we are looking into the area of golden but not necessarily golden itself but more the area possibly just a bit more outside it so we can come home at the end of the day and feel the country..that being said does places like evergreen offer that??? and Please no more said about the ethnic crap...I can live with them just don't tell me I have to like them !!! JR

actually I think you took it all out of content. That Charles guy seems pretty knoweldgeable and helpfull. As far a schools, Colorado has some issues with schools. Especially if you are a special needs student. I met alot of parents in texas that left colorado because of poor schools. I wanted to live here so bad that we are going to send our son to private school, even if I have to work 6 days a week to pay for it and put. BTW the only place that fits your discripion that I can think of is Golden, as others have posted. Its pretty nice. Its cheaper than Boulder and Veil. Its more expensive than lets say Westminster, or Arvada. My wife and I explored it, but elected to move to Loveland for its affordability. The Money I saved in Loveland will pay for the Private schools.

Unfortunately, those slave wages you mention are an issue here in Colorado too even tho there are relatively few minorities. Just check out the "Ft Collins ... decent jobs" thread. So many people want to live here that it has driven down the entire wage structure from professionals and skilled workers all the way down to janitors. And the problem is nation-wide and being driven not by poor minorities but by corporations who only care about their bottom line and have learned that employees are easily replacable. They are even sending jobs overseas rather than pay traditional American wages. The company I am currently (reluctantly) working for just laid off its entire IT department, so now when I call the so-called Help Desk with a computer problem, I get someone who can't speak good enough English to actually help me.

I can't blame you for being angry. Just make sure you are blaming the right people.

You will be competing with minorities for jobs even if you don't live near "them". (How I hate that word, but I can't think of another one.) Denver just recently became a minority-majority city (meaning the majority of population are members of minority groups). That's life.
