My wife and I went to Colorado on a whirlwind 3 day weekend to get a general feel for the state. We drove to Colorado Springs from Denver, then to Fort Collins, then to Breckenridge. What beautiful country! We plan on selling our California house next summer and make the move there and rent for a while until we find just the right place for us, my wife and I and our 6 year old daughter. My wife wants seclusion yet closeness to the amenenties of Denver (no more than 1\2 hours drive in average winter conditions). More and more we are exploring the idea of building to suit our needs. I personally wish for 5 acres in the hills of Golden, a 4 bedroom single level ranch style house with a view. Our budget would round out to about $400,000. Does it really cost $135.00/sf to build? Is this a possible vision? Can anyone suggest specific subdivisions in the area to look at that meet the location criteria especially those of my wife's. How about recommending a friendly realtor to show us some possibilities in the Golden area when we come back for further exploration in Febuary while we stay in Estes Park during that planned vacation. Are the schools any good in the Golden area like they are in northern Colorado Springs as stated in that forum? Which specific schools (elementary)? I know this is a long post but the search for info on Golden is very limited in the information I seek. Thanks for your input , it will be extremely helpful in finalizing our target area.

Unhappy Why build, my fellow Californian?

There is so much housing already available especially at your price range. How can you exclaim "what beautiful country!" and then propose that you want to plop your dream house down in the middle of it? Maybe the beautiful country and your needs contradict, no?

Default Open to the possibilities

We are still exploring the options. Certainly if we find a place that meets our needs without having to build, wouldn't that be less hassle? I come to Colorado because I am ready to relingquish California and start anew in Colorado. We are simple people looking for a better place to live our simple lives as uncomplicated as is possible. All I need is information that can lead to the best decision for us there.

I doubt that would be feasible, especially the 5 acres. You might try looking up Coal Creek Canyon, but that would probably put you more than 1/2 hr from the Denver area.

Custom build for $135 psf? I doubt it in the foothills/close in mountains with good access to Denver. Try closer to $200 psf. A 5 acre parcel there will be pricey, too.

Even older tract homes along the foothills outside Denver are reselling at $150 psf and up.

Default Thanks for the responses.

Can someone recommend a realtor or buyer's agent in the area of Golden that I can hook up with to get more information? Someone knowledgeable, personable and willing to help?

When we were on an exploration trip last May, we spent an entire day with Alisa Hagner (2binDenver from this forum). She was great. She has tons of information about the area and tried to meet our needs in selecting the homes and neighborhoods that would interest us the most. We were interested in the west side of the metro area so spent time in Golden, Arvada, and Littleton. You might want to contact her via the forum or just google her name.

Default Thanks for the responses.

Thanks all. The info I've gotten so far gives me some idea of the possiblilities in the western foothills of Denver. My trip to Colorado in February will be more directed as a result. Are the schools in these areas generally considered decent?
