My wife and I been in Grand Junction now for more than three months now (loving it, by the way), and we are finally settled in a home. We have irrigation water, which is great, but honestly I'm not sure how to take best advantage of it. How often and for how long do you other Western Slope folks water your lawns? I'd assume more than you would in a less dry climate. The people who owned the house before us had it set to ten minutes for each part of the lawn every day.

What do you guys think???

Also, my take on GJ so far:

This is a great town. Coming from the Front Range originally, it is definitely a different feel. Not a place for those concerned with high culture or haute cuisine, but certainly plenty of good food and fun activities for the rest of us. Beautiful views in almost every direction (I look out my office window to the national monument), and friendly people.

And did I mention that in forty minutes I can get from my driveway to the Powderhorn ski area? Or, in the summer, I can be at one of the gorgeous lakes on Grand Mesa. "Crowded" in the mountains around here has a completely different meaning than it does on the Front Range.

Of course not everything is perfect. It is beautiful here, but I miss my views of the high Rockies that I had in Denver. Besides Powderhorn, most ski areas are pretty far away. And there are few, few job prospects. We got very lucky both finding employment, and I would never encourage someone to come out here without already having a job secured.

When I lived in Grand Junction we were also on irrigation water. We set our sprinkler system to water very early in the morning and I believe we watered each station 20 minutes every other day. That was plenty sufficient to keep our grass green. I remember reading somewhere that it's better to water a longer period of time less frequently, than to water everyday.

Are either of you going to comment on the amount of water you're allowed to use, even if it is classified as "irrigation water". Is it "use it or lose it" so just water all day if you want?

It's been almost 4.5 years since I lived in GJ. I don't recall what the use was. I'm sure you could easily look the answer up on either the city page (if you are in the city proper) or the irrigation district's page. Or call someone.

Use it or lose it is exactly right. So I guess the question is this: if you had as much water as you needed in a very arid climate, how often would you water?

We water our GJ lawn approx once or twice a week, enough to keep it green, but we have no pretense that our lawn should look like a golf course. The more water you put on it the more frequently it needs to be mowed. I have better things to do with my time than mowing the lawn.
