So I'm planning a weekend backpacking trip, and I was wondering if any of you Western Slope folks were aware of any trails that lead up to the top of Grand Mesa from the Palisade area. I know that there are some good trails due east of Whitewater, but I'm specifically wondering about the northwest corner of the mesa. Thanks!

The only way I've done it is in a car, there's a dirt road that goes from, if I remember correctly, somewhere east of Whitewater to the top of the Grand Mesa.

There's probably trails too. I would be suprised if there aren't.

There's a book on hiking around the area, I don't have it in front of me, but if you send me a Direct Message reminding me to look for it, I'll send the title back to you.

Damn that would be intense. Driving directions from Palisade/I-70 to the Grand Mesa visitors center is 40 miles. Even a 100% direct route would be at least 25-30 miles I would think?

No. The driving directions you're looking at go completely around the mountain - the long way to get up there.

A hike from the bottom of Grand Mesa to the top would be probably 10 miles or so.

My book is called "Grand Junction Hiking Guide" by Steve Kolarik. "68 hikes - 48 maps."
I no longer have a need for it. If you like I can sell you my copy.
