Looking to plant this tree in my yard in the spring. Have no idea what it is...some type of maple perhaps?

Some type of Red Maple, Acer rubrum. From what I understand, they can be tricky to grow in Colorado.

Another popular tree that does well and turns red in fall is Autumn Purple Ash.

Default this may help

Red Sunset Maple Tree

If you plant a maple tree, you need to get expert advice.
They are not native.
Very weak in late Spring snowstorms.
They are pretty.

Most likely it's an ash.

Maples along with all other hardwoods have an extremely difficult time surviving anywhere in the state due to climate.

Firsthand experience with this. When I was a kid my folks attempted to relocate 3 young sugar maples from Wisconsin to Craig of all places. The trees lived for 4-5 additional years but they never grew.

There actually is a maple native to the Rocky Mountain West--the Mountain Maple (http://www.westernexplorers.us/RkyMtnMaple.pdf )--however I believe the OP's photo is not a photo of a Mountain Maple.
