Oh my Gosh! Crazy story.
My bad luck was when I was robbed by three of them, and they damaged my car.
Colorado does have an illegal immigrant population but you will find it to be much less compared to LV. I recommend the southern sections of Denver (Highlands Ranch, Southglenn, Littleton, Columbine) as they seem to be uniformly wealthy and safe. Best of luck my friend.
