Default Dog visiting the mountains.

I live in Nebraska and love coming out to the mountains. Thought about trying to bring my dog, he is a shih tzu, but I treat him like a dog, lets not get into that. Anyway I just want to come out for a weekend, just kind of relax and take in the air, go for a walk with him, enjoy Colorado for a weekend. Where would be the best place to come, preferably not too far west as it would be a quick weekend trip probably before ski season really get going. Also since he is a smaller dog would the altitude change affect him more? I'm guessing as long as we don't do anything to crazy he should be fine. Thank you.

i would think he would be just fine. Dont keep him outside alone for too long if you are in the wilderness. Small dogs on leashes tied up outside in fields are basically a quick snack for the coyotes

Thanks for your input, my relatives have had plenty of run ins with coyotes here in Nebraska so well aware. I don't think my pup will do well with the hiking thing, so I guess to be more specific I was looking for more a valley populated area, like Silverthorne/Frisco area that has a lot of nice easy valley walkways and would have the hotels that would accept a dog for a night.

Vail has some good dog friendly places...this may not list them all but Vail is a nice place to spend a weekend: Beaver Creek / Vail Pet Friendly Lodging, Hotels, Motels

Most dogs do fine at higher elevations. Just make sure to provide a lot of fresh water and don't over exert your pup.
