I suggest you rent a house in Buena Vista...It is dead center in the middle of the State a few miles from the Continental Divide...You can take day trips to any part of Colorado and be comfortably back at the rent home in the evening....To get an idea about where to go for fun and adventure, go online and visit ColoradoGuy.com and also the Visitors Bureau in town...You will have access guided river rafting and or fly fishing on the Arkansas river, Cottonwood Lake and other nearby reservoirs, mountain biking, zip lining, 14ers by the dozens, hiking trails by the hundreds and even a choo choo train....

Isn't it real windy there or am I thinking of Fairplay. Salida could be nice too. I would like to check out Creede.

Whoever said Ouray or Silverton is a good choice too.

The ski towns would probably fit the bill best, as they have all the nice restaurants and plenty of things to do. In these towns it's also easy to just do a rental for the summer for a few months with no fewer strings attached.

If you want to go more rugged you can look at some of the older, historic mining towns.

we are open as far as budget
my sister lived in minnesota for many years so she likes lakes.
i am originally a NYC gal .
we do not want too hot (we can stay here for that) 70's or 80's is fine.
like antiquing and eating outside at cute bistros...
i am very athletic so biking would be great for me.. or hiking..etc..
she is a people person so we do not want too quiet either.
thanks so much

I'm thinking Grand Lake or Frisco. You'd have a lake/reservoir, hiking, biking, cooler temps, gorgeous scenery...

Ouray. Ridgway.
Ouray. Ridgway.
I've been batting this around in my head since my first visit to the area in 1988, but never figured out a way to do summers in one place with a full-time job elsewhere. But the days of that are, well, the end is in sight, at least, and I'd leave smoke to spend summers in Ouray/Ridgway.
