Could someone suggest a site where I can follow the fire danger in CO? I'm vacationing there in June and want to follow the risk areas. I'll be spending a week in Vallecito and then a few days in Ridgway. Oh, and I want to ride the Silverton train, and gather it might be cancelled if there is too much fire risk. Thanks.

InciWeb the Incident Information System: Colorado Maps One choice for you (no info at the moment) June is usually pretty wet (subject to change). Don't forget about the Chama, NM train while you are in the area.

Thanks for the suggestion about the Chama train, but I think the drought is even worse there. Anyway, I won't be renting a car for a week or so- am taking a package where I get transport from DGO airport to town, ride the train, then get transport to the weeklong riding program. I do hope to ride the Chama train, maybe next year.
Funny, I lived and worked in the area a zillion years ago (1978) and never rode the train.

Consider booking your Chama trip during Balloon Fiesta in ABQ, fall colors / Aspen . nice autumn smells and crunchy leaves (that you don't have to rake ... (Reserve rental car VERY early if doing this)

I left Colorado in 1980, so maybe we crossed paths...(a long time ago)

I worked in Tierra Amarilla in 1978 (New Mexico). Nothing like being 25 and thinking you can bull your way through anything!
I hesitate to vacation in the West in the fall because it's my favorite season where I live (in the East). I am always trying to get away from the moldy summers here. Even when it's cool and humid out, like today (about 60 and very humid), indoors is sticky and overheated- at least where I work. Once I bought a lot in Colorado online because I was looking online from my humid stinkin' workplace! (And sold it two years later, when reality set in). Yes, we supposedly have a/c but it's very uneven, the buildings are very old and some fool thinks that "it's cool at night so turn everything off on the night shift."
Is it retirement time yet?
