hi everyone,

i'm taking a chicago to los angeles road trip, and i'll be taking 76 & 70. can anyone recommend cheap, local eats along the way? you pick farms, farmers markets, small town cafes, and anything sustainable would be cool to know about.

thanks!

Depends what time of the year you are coming through. Palisades, just before Grand Junction on I-70 has a few farm stands right off the highway, but there isn't much available until summer. Vail has the largest farmer's market in the state, it won't start until mid June.

Yelp is very useful.
Just search on what's nearby.

I assume you will be doing a split at I-80 in Western NE.

Don't miss Ollie's at Paxton, NE

Ole's Big Game Steakhouse & Lounge

That should keep your 'tank full' till you get to Glenwood Springs, CO *(the first place I would stop after Paxson if westbound). After an evening in the hot springs, I then cut south towards Moab, UT. The UT National Parks are not to be missed. As you approach Las Vegas (50 mi NE) don't miss https://www.google.com/search?q=vall...2&ved=0CDgQsAQ Excellent camping!

Then in LV, my favorite place is Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association | Las Vegas, Nevada

For food I usualy stop in small towns off the interstate highways, so I can get to know 'locals', sometimes using Jane and Michael Stern's Roadfood | The Splendid Table YMMV.... There is also a 'road food' ,com

(I need to scope out nice chinese and mex places so I can get free used cooking oil for fuel.)

I also stay in Hospitality / guest homes, so traveling is cheaper than staying home (property taxes).
