Hello

Looking to plan a road trip into Colorado in July. I have a 5 year old girl and a 7 year old boy. They are the adventurous type (to a point of course) and wanted to take them rafting. But also ideally we are close to some other stuff to do.

Can anyone recommend an outfitter and rafting city/location/river name ? Any other info is appreciated.

** rafting ideally is peaceful to moderately violent only

Thanks

I think you are going to have a tough time finding a rafting company that will allow a 5 year old. Clear Creek Rafting Co. has a minimum age of 7 years and they are the closest to Denver. Noah's Ark in Buena Vista has a minimum age of 6 years. It will be more of a float trip (class I-II) than anything. My youngest son finally turned 7 this year so we will be taking the kids out on the rivers this year.

How much time will you be in CO? Where are you focusing your trip? Denver? All over the state? I'll try to give you some more ideas if I know how long and where you'll be in the state. I have three very adventurous boys and we travel all over the place.

For 5 and 7 yrs old I think they might enjoy a gold mine tour and panning for gold.

I disagree. Go rafting on one of the best Colorado excursions out there... Brown's Canyon on the Arkansas River between Salida and Canon City. You can even blast through a Class 4 Sidel's Suck Hole... just do it in an oar boat. Let the guide take care of the oars and let the kids paddle away and you grab them and see they stay in the raft through the white stuff.

That's what I think.

You can take kids 5 and older on SOME of the raft trips through Browns Canyon, but it depends on the water levels. I just Googled "age for rafting Arkansas River" and most trips were for 8 and above. Still, even if you take the kids out on a family float that allow 5 year olds, it will be fun.

You could not pay me to take a 5 year old on a rafting trip unless it Class 1 only -- it's a recipe for disaster on wilder rapids. On 2s and 3s you've got to have some sense about you to lean into the boat or push off the rock when one side is about to tip in (whether it's actually going to dump someone or not). A 5 year old, even an aggressive, bright one, DOESN'T have that capability whatsoever. Also, it then compromises your safety if you're watching your child the entire time, not paying attention to your work on the raft. Stick with the tranquil stuff, nothing more.

I have a very adventurous, nimble 5 year old. I've also been rafting in CO and elsewhere multiple times.

What do you know about oar boats?

I'll tell you what I know... they are very stable, the oar person does 99% of the work, and the other folks in the raft are along for the ride and there to enjoy the scenery. A good guide can steer clear of the more aggresive rapids if need be... depending on water levels and conditions.

Is someone arguing with you about the stability of boats here? I missed it.

I know 5 year olds and 5 year olds should not be on class III rapids. I've been on THREE trips where 7-9 year olds have dumped in the water. All rescued, of course, two sent to the ED (broken arm and gash to the head). I'm not arguing about boats or guides. I'm saying below a certain age, on white water -- as a parent -- it is irresponsible and unwise.
