My family is thinking about moving from a fairly inexpensive place to live (West Michigan). I want to know how much a family of 4 needs to earn to live a fairly comfortable life? I know this is subjective but don't want to move out there and realize that you can't survive on around $100,000.

I think it depends on what you want, and how much you spend.

People get by here on less than $50,000.

Just don't buy more house than you can afford.

I would say the water in Castle Rock can be a little expensive, unless your on well water. But even then the well can require a re-drill and that could be a 10-20k cost.

Also most sure you understand the property taxes of where you buy. In Castle Rock, this ranges from 7% to almost 12%. I also check the assessor page to find out what the property taxes are on a particular (prospective) home.

You can definately survive on your the income you stated -- just don't buy too much house.

Thanks for the advice. We are pretty good at living within are budget but want to be able to have money for our children to participate in activitites while still paying the mortgage. Nothing extravagant!

Default Hmmm...

I've got a similar question, sorry for the thread-jacking.

I'm considering a move from a smaller city Illinois to the Castle Rock area to work for a general contractor. My starting salary would be in the 48k - 50k range. Does that spell comfortable living in Castle Rock? I know it does where I am living currently. I've looked at cost of living calculators but I just don't trust them.

Also, my g/f would be moving with me and she is going to be getting her elementary education degree. Are there good teaching opportunities around here?

Thanks!

I was also wondering about the teaching jobs because I used to teach before my daughters were born and am now thinking about returning to work.

It seems like the teaching jobs would be plentiful here. Douglas County Schools seem like they have been hiring a lot lately, you can check out their web site (job listings) if you haven't already. And there are several charter schools in the area as well. One of my neighbors is the Athletic Directory over at the new high school in CR and he said they are really doing things right there ... and seemed to indicate that things were really progressive (esp. at the new HS).

There are several teaching job threads on the Denver and Colorado forums. There is a lot of good information on them for you to search. I am not a teacher, but I have friends who are. Teaching is very competitive here. There are usually hundreds of applicants for every job. That may sound discouraging, but you may have exactly what some district is looking for.

Thanks for answering the question on teachers. I'll be sure to check the district website as well as do a more thorough search on the forums.

Any info regarding a 48k - 50k salary range? I would like to rent an apartment for a year at least. I would be looking for a modern 2 bed 2 bath unit close to town. The research I've done on the net suggests that the nicer complexes are reasonably priced (rent.com). My lifestyle isn't too lavish. I like to not live paycheck to paycheck though. I enjoy dining out, going to movies, weekend trips, I love jet skiing and boating although that doesn't seem like it will be happening too often in castle rock.

Any more info is appreciated, you guys are great so far!
