Start at about 8th and Main - Eat at one of the breweries, they are kid friendly. Walk east to 3rd Ave for some nice old homes, then down to the Animas river at the 9 st bridge. There are some nice paths to walk. Thats about all the time you will have. Its what we do everytime we arrive in Durango.

Durango's a nicer place to stay, personally.
I drove that detour yesterday. South on US285 from Alamosa to CO17 at Antonito down over Cumbres & La Manga passes, down to Chama, then US84 back up to Pagosa Springs, then continuing on to Durango. That is the recommended detour for the US160 closure thru South Fork & over Wolf Creek Pass. I was driving 6 tons of truck, trailer, & car combined. It was an interesting (and spectacular) drive.

No issues.

The college has museum exhibits occasionally that are worth checking out. In Ouray, go to the hot springs swimming pool--fun for the kids.
