Sure and while we're at it, lets let all the obese diabetics cover their own medical expenses. After all, it's not my fault they are obese and can't exercise and eat healthy. They are driving up MY insurance costs. My family is all fit and healthy, so why should I have to pay?

I'm really liking this pick and choose myopic view. I could save 10's of thousands on taxes and insurance if the government catered their spending to my situation.

In rural areas in the mountains, we're not allowed to use water outside anyway. We can't even collect what falls on our roof. How are we supposed to protect our homes from fire?

America is about choice. That's what makes this country great. Now when something doesn't suit your ideals you want to jump ship like a rat.

And by the way, us "mostly affluent" fools pay a ***** ton of tax. Give me back my 2012 income tax, and I can employe a fire man to watch my house for the next decade.

All of these affluent second home owners pay a LOT in property tax, given how little they use local resources like roads, schools and water etc. It's basically free money for the county that they are happy to collect year after year. They also support locals like builders, painters, well drillers etc. ALL WHILE NOT TAKING JOBS FROM LOCALS.

Rural Colorado is just so happy to take our money for basically nothing in return, but when it does come time to pony up, you cry foul? I lol in your general direction. Guess you don't know which side your bread is buttered on.

Firemen get payed 90K a year? I don't think so.

I'm not complaining about insurance costs, but rather Jazzlovers inference that the 'mostly wealthy' are tax/insurance freeloaders by building houses in the mountains, where they may need fire protection.

He seems to conveniently forget, that the second home owners he so despises, are paying more than him in property tax. But they are not using water or other precious resources 95% of the year. But yet in his mind, they are the freeloaders? Now that's rich

Actually I was using $10 an hour for 24 hour protection, then rounded up. You did want 24 hour protection?

Well, it's a mute point really, unless you can get the government to refund my 2012 income tax.

Just in case it's not obvious, it's not a serious suggestion, but merely said to make a point.

Yes, of course they do. But the point is, the 'mostly wealthy' pay more than their fair share of taxes. So please explain to me the logic of making them pay more again for fire protection?

I don't know if everyone agrees with your claim that "most wealthy" pay more than their fair share. Unless you pay 50% or something.

The quote is MOSTLY wealthy, not MOST wealthy.

And the percentages have little to do with it. For example, say someone earned $1m and payed ~ 400K in tax (40%).

Another person earns $60K and pays ~ $24K in tax, still 40%. So the wealthy guy pays 16 times the amount of tax. SIXTEEN TIMES!!!! And that's just income tax. What about property tax, that's more too if you have a nicer home. Sales tax is likely more to since the wealthy have more money to spend.

So wealthy guy pays 16-20 times the tax of the average Joe, but now they are expected to pay more again. What a crock of poo. Their taxes more than cover the extra fire protection risk. In fact I wouldn't mind betting that the higher property taxes alone, cover the cost of the extra risk.

What exactly does the wealthy do, that requires them to pay massive amounts tax? What do they get for their extra mandatory contribution? Sweet **** all.

What this is really about is the government finding new revenue streams for their clients (oops I meant to say lobbyists).

That is the function of the government. To channel money from the people to the corporations. Your tax dollars at work.
