So I was reading a thread on here and they were talking about grocery stores I think called Safeway and King Sooper! I said WHAAAAT? Then I realized how different even stores must be out there.
Here we have Harris Teeter, Lowes and Food Lion (Piggly Wiggly at the coast) So not seeing those out there is a change I hadn't thought of! What else is different in Colorado vs. East coast? Different chains? Words? Slang? Tradition? Food? (I've heard of the Rocky Mountain Oyster haha) ![]() Obviously here we say YA'LL alot and I'm guilty of it. But I'm sure there are other words that are used differently out there too and I'm curious to know! |

You will probably weigh less in Colorado.

Happily, you can estimate your change in acceleration due to gravity with this handy map from the GRACE satellite: http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/jpe...652_modest.jpg
North Carolina is in a blue/green low gravity area. There are actually Safeways on the east coast, at least in the DC area, they aren't great grocery stores imo. Most of the big box chains are here (not ikea or trader joes), and malls have the same generic stores are everywhere else. Food is expensive because of the distribution/long driving needed. There are lots of beef commercials on the radio, dunno if there is really and regional cuisine... |

The only store I miss is Trader Joe's. I called the main office and was told they don't have any stores in CO, because they would not be allowed to sell wine in the store. There are TJs that don't sell wine, but.... that is what I was told. Maybe some day!

There is a TJ's in Rockville, Maryland, in a county with more strict liquor laws than CO (no alcohol of any kind in grocery stores, including beer). They just don't carry the wine or beer products, and that store has been open for years. Happily, I was in ABQ last week and visited their TJ's for a nice haul of excellent licorice, triple ginger snaps, and affordable goat cheese. I'm sure one could find similar items locally, but the point of TJ is that they are *inexpensive* - their half pound goat cheese logs are $3.50, which would be $10 at Safeway and $15 at Whole Paycheck.
I miss Market Basket (a new england grocery chain) and decent asian grocery stores (and restaurants). (Yes, I have heard about the H-Mart in Aurora, but I don't want to make a 100-mile round trip to the grocery store. POM in Broomfield is closer, but not that great). And I miss some of the good indie used bookstores from both DC and Boston. And good fabric stores. And the Gold Toe sock outlet. There are some good thrift stores in Boulder, and McGuckins is nice. And there is a good yarn store at Table Mesa. |

Many of the stores in Colorado are the same as those on the West Coast, but they may go by a different name. In Southern California, we have Vons and Ralphs grocery stores. In Colorado, it's Safeway and King Soopers. Vons is owned by Safeway, and both Ralphs and King Soopers are owned by Kroger. Both areas also have Albertson's Grocery Stores. Most of the other big box stores and chain restaurants are common to both areas, and are probably also common to the East Coast. Some examples would be Home Depot, Border's, Sports Authority, Starbucks, Mimi's Cafe, Applebees, Target, Mervyn's (not on the East Coast), Macy's, Costco, Sam's Club, Walmart, and so on. Colorado does not have an IKEA, though there are stores in nearby Utah and Texas (still a long ways away). Colorado also does not have a Bloomingdale's Department store, and the closest ones are in Nevada or Illinois. Colorado does have some stores that we don't have in Southern California, like Shepler's Western Wear, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Gander Mountain. |

Where are the Mervyn's in Colorado anymore? I thought they all left.
